Sometimes you’re the hammer and sometimes you’re the nail
November 19th, 2010
My fourteen plus years of riding bikes has brought me some of my highest highs, as well as some of my lowest lows. Yet, I still can’t kick the habit. Case in point, last Saturday night, under the lights at the Bay Area Super Prestige Sierra Point race , I did my first CX race of the season, and boy did it hurt good! Coming off the couch to race cross is like bringing a Volkswagen van to Infineon Raceway and thinking that you will be competitive. Like a Volkswagen van, I am not known for my explosive speed, which became painfully apparent as soon as the gun went off for the Men’s A field, and I found myself, basically, blown out the back. A spectacular start line wreck a hundred yards into the race jammed up and confused the foaming field, which opened the door for me to pick my way through the shrapnel of bodies and bikes to not be dead last. With lungs in my throat and heart rate pinned, I put my head down and entered the pain cave for the next 60 minutes.

Team Lost Coast Does It Again!
November 8th, 2010Marin Bike’s team rider Brian “The Lost Coast Lion” Astell checks in with a cyclocross race report.
Pilarcitos # 1 was a success. The morning was cold and dark but dry on the coast where Lost Coast Brewery/ Marin riders started out for the oakland venue. Nicole Garcia, Lost Coast’s newest team member, Amon Pease, former and now again team member, and me, Brian Astell headed down to Oak Town. As we got off the coast we were expecting the day to warm up and greet us with some sun, but we were sorely mistaken. Instead it got cloudier and wetter until we were getting rained on.
AT’s Showdown Goes OFF!
November 8th, 2010
Ride SFO’s Bike Expo this past weekend, arguably the Bay Area’s premier cycling event that artfully combines a cycling fashion show and swap meet with cyclo cross racing and world class dirt jumping, was a huge success. Hundreds of cyclists of all backgrounds converged on the Cow Palace to partake in the day’s events, confirming that this gathering is quickly becoming a must do for those who like anything and everything to do with two wheels. Speaking of anything and everything, that’s what AT’s boys, some of the world’s best dirt jumpers, were throwing out there when hucking themselves off the massive features that had been sculpted for the Jump Jam event.
Chile Pepper Ho-Down gets down!
November 1st, 2010
As if you’d need another excuse to make a pilgrimage to the trails of Moab, along comes the 5th Annual Chile Pepper Ho-Down, which is part film fest, freak show, and bike race all rolled into one extremely fun four day, must do event. Fall is definitely one of the best times of year to enjoy Moab. With temps in the mid 60s, a plethora of diverse trails at our fingertips and the snow capped La Sal Mountains as our back drop, Team Marin enjoyed four days of hanging with good people, riding and demoing on some of Moab’s most iconic trails.
