Yuri Checks in after competing in his latest endurance race aboard his Pine Mountain:
Morning all, I just wanted to check in with my report from this past weekend’s 8 hour Coolest Race Against Cancer, an event in it’s 5th year that has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the fight against cancer.
My plans of doing the 24 hour component of this event fell through when two teammates went down ill early last week, so I decided to salvage the weekend by racing the single speed 8 hour race. Despite my muddied appearance, the weather for the event was perfect. Temperatures in the mid 60s and a slight breeze greeted us for the noon time mass start. I had a fast start and settled into a good rhythm that saw me, and another rider, separate ourselves from the 30+ rider single speed field. We seesawed back and forth all day, ebbing and flowing, pushing each other to our breaking points. It was only fitting that it came down to the last lap, actually, the last climb out, that saw us separate for good. After 7:58 on the bike, I completed 8 laps, rode 96 miles, climbed over 13,500 ft., and finished second by less than two minutes.
I think this photo, snapped moments after I crossed the line, says it all. Shelled, hollow, tapped, are a few words that come to mind. I buried myself in my Dad’s honor and am content that I left everything I had out on course. I thank all of you for your continued support because I couldn’t be chasing my dreams and pushing my physical and mental limits without your help. Have a great week! Yuri
